The 'folia' is a repeating sequence of chords in a sixteen-bar sequence, probably standardised by Jean-Baptiste Lully in the 17th century. It came into being in the folk festival music of late 15th century Portugal, and since that time there have been many versions and variations. Most are chamber works, made popular originally as trio sonatas in the Baroque era. According to 'Wiki', more than 150 composers have used it. The one I've made is written for a modern orchestra. Loosely translated, folia means 'madness'. Each sequence suggests a different mood, swinging between melancholy and mayhem.
